What is a skewer in cooking?
A long, fine tool is used to pierce foods such as meat or cakes to test to see if they are cooked or to pierce small pieces of meat, vegetables, or fruit to form kebabs. A skewer can also be used to hold meat, poultry, or fish in shape during cooking.
In Classical Greece, a small spit or skewer was known as ὀβελίσκος (obelisks), and Aristophanes mentions such skewers being used to roast thrushes. The story is often told of medieval Middle Eastern soldiers – usually Turkish or Persian, depending on the storyteller – who cooked meat skewered on their swords.
What is the stick to hold food?
A skewer is a thin metal or wood stick used to hold pieces of food together. The word may sometimes be used as a metonym, to refer to the entire food item served on a skewer, as in “chicken skewers”. Skewers are used while grilling or roasting meats and fish, and in other culinary applications.
The most popular options are made of either inexpensive bamboo or durable stainless steel. Classic bamboo skewers are cheap, readily available, and disposable, while stainless steel skewers are reusable and sturdier.
How do you eat off a skewer?
When eating shish kebab as a main course, lift the skewer and use your fork to push and slide the chucks off the skewer and onto your plate. Place the emptied skewer on the edge of your plate and use your knife and fork to cut the meat and vegetables into manageable pieces, one bite at a time.”
